The Municipal Court assists individuals cited for violating the Town of Bernalillo Ordinances, i.e. Animal Control Code, Misdemeanor Non-Traffic Violations and State traffic laws, which are adopted by the City Council.
The Municipal Court is under the supervision of the State Supreme Court, and is budgeted through the Town Administration and overseen by the City Council. As the third branch of government, the Court takes full responsibility for policies and procedures, independent of the Town.
All violations issued by the Town of Bernalillo Police Department are either paid or heard in Municipal Court.
At the time of the issuance of a citation, defendants are given the option to either pay the penalty assessment or to appear for an informal plea court, which then will be set up for a trial. Court hearings are heard on Thursdays, beginning at 4:00 PM.
Cash, check, money order and Visa / Mastercard are acceptable forms of payments. For your convenience, you may also pay by phone with Visa or Mastercard by calling the numbers above.
If the defendant disagrees with the ruling by the Judge, the defendant has the right to appeal to District Court within 15 days.
Failure to Appear for Court / Payment of Penalty Assessment will result in a Bench Warrant / Suspension of defendant’s driver license.
